Kula's Beer Festival Adventure: A Photo Blog

The night finally came!!! Showed up a little late because Kelcey (my partner in crime) had to work, but trust me, we caught up. The following are reviews of beers I remembered to write about. They're incomplete as I lost my pen an hour in. :S

image

Upon arrival, I went straight to the strawberry beer line. Fantastic stuff, but the wait was soooo long. After that booth, our philosophy was the beer with the shortest lines was the beer we drank. Had some Strongbow for nostalgia's sake, brought back memories of Rugbyfest. Kilkenny was great, Smithwicks was disappointing.

image

As you can see I marked some suggestions for beers to try and ones to stay away from in green and red pen, respectively. Wasn't following my tasting guide at this point and got a rude surprise. Regretful.

image

Cooper's had all the potential in the world. Was impressed with the initial taste but it just went south after that. Pleasantly surprised with Curim Gold. One of my favourites from the night. I think....

image

I LOVED Blackthorn Cider. It may just be added to my next Liquor Mart purchase when I go on my routine rum run. :)

image

We sell this one at the park, thought I would try it. Defintely an acquired taste. No wonder I've never sold one.

image

Where most beers have a sizable list of ingredients, this one had four. Weirdest beer of the night. Not sure which one on the list it actually was, as I cannot read Ukraininan and I was beyond the point of paying attention to the beer girl.

image

Sleemans is a Canadian classic. Kelcey had one I think to wash out the taste of some nasty stout.

image

Note to self: Never drink beer from Scotland.

image

I don't even think this one counts as beer. It seriously tasted like AMAZING grapefruit juice. I went back for seconds and thirds of this one when I encountered a not so nice tasting brew. I think in all my excitement over it's amazingness, I probably left my pen on the booth here. LOL

image

Walked down to my favourite late night restaurant, Johnny G's after the festival. Enjoyed some softer beverages and some food. After we got from downtown to the southernmost suburb in the city where Kelcey lives for $2.30!!! Hopped on a bus that took us to a nearby mall, then hopped on another that took us directly a block away from her house. Apparently we can call this number and transit picks you up and takes you where you need to be. We've found our new taxi service.

image

I passed out fast though we got in just after midnight. Had to milk those hours asleep before I was shocked awake from the alarm on my phone to watch the Tri Nations match.

image

Post-second sleep. Look rough, but I'm in good shape. No hangover! :)

All in all, fantastic way to end the week. Kelcey and I are already planning our tasting strategy for next year.

Kula's NZ vs. SA Match Report

THE LONGEST, MOST BIAS, AND SUPERFICIAL MATCH REPORT YOU WILL EVER READ (OR NOT READ)

Due to unforeseeable circumstances I passed out soon after arriving home from a party that involved getting chased by men with knives and baseball bats, random people I've never spoken to, police, and a person going to hospital, 5 minutes before the game.

Waking up dejected that I didn't get to tweet or banter a bit on here during it, I watched the game on demand via rugbyzone.com and kinda jotted down just the random thoughts in my head that would have appeared either on twitter or rucku. Feel free to ignore me as necessary. :)

Don't mind the little turncoat action at the end. At that point I was going for my SuperBru pick to be bang on.

Love you all,

KULA

NZ 0 -  0 RSA

- Early points for the All Blacks with in the first minute. Troubling?

NZ 3 - 0 RSA

- Frans started with a good game.

- Oh Morne. I was just about to say you were good, but then you went and gave away a penalty.

- After that replay, Read had Morne by the neck... fcuker.

- Joe Rocks is an IDIOT!

- PERCY!!!

- 60 m kick, and.....it's good! I. Love. Frans. His confidence will be up now. Though the way it dropped, I think his range is shrinking.

NZ 3 - 3 RSA

- 8 minutes in and I finally notice Donald is on the field.

- Oh god. Don't give the kick the Steyn pleeease. His accuracy is not THAT good.

- I was wrong. Cracker of a game for Frans, kicking beautifully in his last test for the Boks. I'm going to miss you when you're gone.

NZ 3 - 6 RSA

- Joe Rocks fucks up again. JAAAAAAAAAANE! WHERE ARE YOUU, JAAAAAAAAAAANE?

- I like Kaino, even if he plays for Auckland.

- Ah, Joe did something good. Fuck. Get off defense, Boks.

- Too much pressure on Donald, switching him before he cracks. ABs are smart cookies.

- Piri Weepu: water boy.

- FFS, the failing Bok scrum fails again. I'm soooo surprised. Sarcasm anyone?

- Oh course Danny got that one. He's Dan Carter.

NZ 6 - 6 RSA

- I quite enjoy these repetitive shots of Frans. :)!!!

- "Nonu goes reasonably high... but it's okay." Cuz it's Nonu? lol. Juuuust causing shit.

- YES! DROP KICK!!!! I'd like to see you do that, Daniel Carter. ;-) I think Morne was a little jealous that Frans had all the points thus far.

NZ 6 - 9 RSA

- Bismarck's attractiveness is underrated. Pretty handsome for a front rower. Oh yeah, he's the hooker.

- Anyone see Bismarck grab someone (who didn't have the ball) around the neck? I say something good about him and he fcuking goes back to his old tricks.

- Try? I hope so, cuz he's not going to ask the TMO was green #2 being a cheeky, dirty fcuker. He's going to ask try or no try.

- Oh the grabbing was brought up. Sorry Woodcock, better luck next time. You should try doing that to Bismarck and see what happens then.

- YES!! TRYYYYY!!

NZ 6 - 16 RSA

- Carter slots another. That's 902 test points. I'm impressed.

NZ 9 - 16 RSA

- I love how Jimmy's hair is angled back. Shows how fast he is?

-HAHAHAHA! I think this is the game plan for the ABs: Miss pass over Donald, run it the hell up the field.

- I like you Stephen, but please stick to the plan and stop giving him the ball.

- Oh FFS. He can't get 3 for 3, can he? I don't want it to go to his pretty little head if he makes or doesn't make it. Especially the latter.

- He did it! Woooo!!

NZ 9 - 19 RSA

- Awe, even the Kiwi commentators are bashing Donald. Poor guy.

- WOW! Why do I keep doubting you, Frans?

- Ooo! Spies almost got to that one before Joe Rocks. THAT would have been embarrassing.

- Oh Mils. I'm sad that this is the first time I've noticed you.

- HA HA HA HA! Frans tries to step up to kick. You're not at altitude, my dear.

- Dammit. And there goes his head. Thanks, Dan, thanks. Fcuk.

- Is Richie no longer wearing his hat?

- Read is a fcuker. Why do you have to do that? You already have Rodder's starting spot. No need for that shite.

- Steyn and Steyn: Attorneys at Law... I mean Goal Kicking Extraordinares.

NZ 9 - 22 RSA

- The King is an animal with ball in hand. Love it.

- I want to slide on the ground like Frans just did. Looks like fun times.

NZ 12 - 22 RSA

- I kno I talk a lot of superficial BS, so here's the rugby. First half: Kicking is great from both sides, ABs fighting hard at the break down, SA lineouts are superb, and until that bit at the end of that 1st half the ABs hadn't looked like scoring. Great stuff tho!

NZ 12 - 22 RSA @ Half Time

- And the second half commences... I think I'll tone down the commentary...

- I miss Kahui.

- If only Nonu could keep hold of the ball, he'd be golden. Great breaks.

- I will also miss JdV after this year. That. Was. A. BEAUTY.

NZ 12 - 29 RSA

- Puff Divvie was getting a little riled up in there...

- TRY ABs! Okay for my pick to be true, I'll allow the Blackness to score one more, but have the Boks get enough kicks to stay in front by 1-5 points.

NZ 19 - 29 RSA

- Nothing like seeing a prop thundering down the field with the ball... even if he is playing on the other team.

- Does it make me a bad Bok fan if I wanted to see Dan score that?

- Exciting stuff. The play is everywhere!

- Cory Jane! Cory Jane! Cory Jane! I just want to see him play. Pleeeease?

- What, what, whaaaat? The Boks get a penalty in their favour from scrummaging?! No way! Nothing to get too excited about, SA. You're still in trouble @ that facet of the game.

- Frans is running around the field like a man possessed. I guess you have to play as hard as you can when it'll be your last game for your country for a while.

- Good to see Habana has retained his excellent defence skills from last week.

- Is it just me, or are the Kiwi commentators calling John Smit, George Smit... may just be because my feed is really quiet tho. Doesn't sound right.

- I don't know why people are always jumping down Bakkies throat when he does something on the field. Bismarck does waaaay cheaper shit out there.

NZ 22 - 29 RSA

- That looked HILARIOUS. Spies gaining on Carter. That would just be positively frightening in Dan's position.

- Morne has got some quick legs on him. Pretty swift chasing that kick. Now he needs to make this goal, and the ABs can have a converted try and I'm happy.

NZ 22 - 32 RSA

- Adam Thompson! Bah ha ha ha. Sorry dude, you'll never be able to pull off the hair like Frans. Give it up.

- CORY JANE IS ON THE FIELD! I REPEAT CORY JANE IS ON. THE. FIELD. :D!!!!!

- And he's not even replacing Joe Rocks.

- Oh NO!! Nonu is bleeding!!!

- Ricky Januarie, the Thumb, has sauntered on the to field. Urgh... Puff Divvie, you're not winning by THAT much.

- COME ON ALL BLACKS! I NEED ONE MORE CONVERTED TRY FROM YOU!!! DOOOOO IIIIT!!!

- FFS! CORY JANE GET THE BALL DOWN!

- THANK YOU RICHIE, THE KING, MCCAW!!! Now that conversion, please, Danny Boy.

- I LOVE YOU DAN CARTER! WHAT. A. KICK.

NZ  29 - 32 RSA

- I'm so neeeeervous! You have permission to kick that egg all day, my dear Springboks.

- I'm hyperventilating a little. I can't look! I can't look!

NZ 29 - 32 RSA @ Full Time

- YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!! THE SPRINGBOKS WIN!!!!!!!!!!! 2009 TRINATIONS CHAMPS!!!!!!! WOOOOO!!!

- I am a very proud SA fan right now. They've beaten AUS and NZ at home. They have proven they are the best team in the world right now. Happy days!
